Electrical Storm Photos

February 25th, 2005 by James

Wednesday night a cold front rolled through with a LOT of electrical activity. Before the rain started, I set up my camera and tripod and captured some long exposures. I don’t have one of those doo-dangles that presses the shutter when it sees lightning, so instead, I used a wideangle lens and longer exposures to capture the lightning. The Canon 1DmkII is amazing for long exposures – even with no noise reduction, 30s exposures look excellent:

Testing New UW Photo Gear

February 21st, 2005 by James

Due to HORRID winter weather in the Gulf, I haven’t been able to go diving since Christmas break. So in the meantime, I’ve been testing UW photo gear.

Two weeks ago, I tested the Ikelite Canon 20D housing which is equipped with an eTTL2 circuit:

Yes, I took a bunch of sample photos of a rock – pretty exciting.

I also tested my new Seacam housing for the Canon 1DmkII. I needed to find the correct extension ring to use with the Sigma 12-24mm lens and Stephen Frink had kindly loaned me 4 rings of various lengths to try. I only ended up needing to try three of them, and it was a good thing as the water was freezing. I took a bunch of photos of a sheet of linoleum with a square pattern on it. Here’s how I set it up:

I held down the top and bottom corners with a few dive weights.

During the first test, I looked up only to see that my friend’s dog had decided he needed to “rescue” me. I ended up having a pretty good time taking his picture:

So far, this week I’ve tested the Sigma 150mm macro lens, and the Inon D-2000 strobe. Not sure what’s next…
