San Diego Weekend
January 29th, 2007 by James
Sarah and I popped over to San Diego this month for a quick visit. I guess it was a sort of a late Christmas and New Years “make up” because I was in Africa for the holidays this year. We were able to visit all of my relatives, and go on 3 nice hikes in 4 days - not a bad performance
Saturday’s hike was an “urban” walk up Black Mountain near Rancho Bernardo. Black Mountain used to be out in the middle of no-where, between Mira Mesa and the huge empty Lusardi Ranch. Now - from the summit - you can see houses to the North, West, and South. Then when you get to the top, you’re assaulted with a surreal array of antennae - they have always been here - but I was never close enough to read the sign that said - EM Radiation Hazard - Stay back 3 feet.
On Sunday, Kate took us out to the back side of the mountains for a hike near Borrego. We climbed up over a ridge and past an old amethyst mine into the “Valley of the Moon.” Definitely a fitting name. At his site, we were just over 1000 yards from the Mexican border.
On Sunday we did some trail running from the beach at Torrey Pines up onto the plateau and around on the trail there. The winter front had blown away all of the clouds and fog and the visability was amazing. We saw two gray whales, one of which was just outside the surf-line. It was great to be able to see everyone and do so much on such a short trip.
