We spent five nights camping and hiking over New Years with friends. We started with one night at Seminole Canyon State Park followed by four nights camping in Big Bend National Park. The weather was pretty cold, but we didn’t have rain or snow, so the hiking was excellent. We had a great trip and took some cool photos.

Sarah and I want to do some dives while we’re in San Diego so we spent some time training in our drysuits’ in a friend’s swimming pool. Since we won’t be doing a lot of cold water diving, we both bought used drysuits which are “less than perfect.” Mine could use about 1 more inch of inseam (doh!) and Sarah’s has a charming pink and green color scheme
We did some experimentation to see how much weight we need, some drills in regulating buoyancy, and just messed around. Unfortunately, Sarah’s suit has a leaky zipper, so we’re going to have to get that fixed.

Since I fly offshore a lot in helicopters, I have to take a water survival and helicopter “ditching” training course every couple of years. Yesterday I took the Helicopter Underwater Escape Training (HUET) course from Occupational Safety Training in New Iberia. The course was very well run and the training simulator was impressive.

Sarah and I were aboard the Spree August 26-29 for the annual Agency Industry Group Expedition. We had great weather, an excellent group, and fabulous diving this year. A special thanks go out to everyone involved for keeping this going - what an excellent event.

In honor of our ancestor Lucy’s visit to Houston, I went back through my safari photos and put together this panorama photo of Olduvai Gorge in Tanzania. The gorge is in the Ngorogoro Conservation Area in the Eastern Serengeti and is a geologic feature that cuts through sediment layers from 2.5 million to 15,000 years old. Our modern understanding of human evolution began with finds by Dr. Louis and Mary Leakey in the gorge, where faulting and erosion have laid bare 100 meters or so of sediment. For more information, check out the Wiki page
For now, enjoy this small panorama (made with 5 vertical shots from the Rebel XT):
A bit of trivia about the name of the gorge - it is really called Oldupai Gorge, after the Oldupai plants that live there, however, the name was mistakenly recorded as Olduvai by German scientists.

Sarah and I spent the weekend in Georgetown for a family get-together. Amidst family functions we got to spend a little time visiting our friends Whitney and Mike and being tourists. We stopped into the Air and Space museum and the National Gallery where I made this photo of one of the sculptures:

Due to hard work and perseverance by my good friend Nico my blog and gallery has been moved from its old home (failing hardware) to a new space. Thanks again Nico! Along w/ the move, there are new versions of everything. I’ve been out of town so haven’t gotten a chance to update my theme or link in older photos, but hang around as it will get there. In the meantime, check out the upgrade to Gallery 2 - just click on the photo below!

Cheers

Sarah, Chris, and I went to the Art Car Parade this weekend and it was fabulously fantastic. Like whoa. The weather was great but the bright sun made it hard photographically.

My last day in EG I got to go up in the mountains for a few hrs and visit Moca Bioko - a small village at about 6,000 ft. The village attracts all of EG’s 5 tourists a year, so the folks that live there are quite sick of having their picture taken. Maybe they will catch on like the Masai and start charging…

A house in the forest, the old school in Moca, and having a Malta with Cris Kennedy and friends
I went to Moca with Cristobal Kennedy who is a local that sometimes helps out as a guide. He was able to help me get a tourist permit from the government that allowed me to take photos. I found Cris on Bioko.org - a website about natural history research in EG. I highly recommend you talk to Cris if you plan to stay in EG for any length of time as he has great local knowledge.
