Sarah and I went down to the bird sanctuaries at High Island last weekend. The roseate spoonbills and great white egrets are building their nests and starting to mate. Some of the GWE’s were sitting on eggs already.

Sarah took this photo of 3 roseate spoonbills using my camera and lens.

This little fella was outside my front door when I returned from a run this evening. He/she was kind enough to let me pass by and get my camera for a few snaps before it flew off.

I’ve posted some but not all of the photos from Labor Day weekend. Thanks to our hostess for an awesome weekend. Check back soon for more photos.

The really good photos of Andrea and Mark on the Sea-Doo were taken by Edgardys - way to go!

Sarah and I recently completed the photography for the book Fantastic Water Workouts by Human Kinetics Publishing. The shoot took four Sunday’s to complete, working in the large pool at the Memorial Hermann Wellness Center here in Houston. It was an interesting and difficult assignment. I was lucky to receive lots of advice from photographers in the Houston Underwater Photo Society, and the Texas Photo Forum regarding the set-up. In the end, I opted to use all submersible flashes because I could not 100% eliminate the risks of using studio strobes. This was my first time using an umbrella light modifier underwater and it worked quite well. Here’s a sample to give you an idea of the type of photos we made:

Sarah and I photographed a Dance Houston show at Zilkha hall a few months ago, but I’ve only just posted the photos. There were three flamenco dancers, a guitarist and a vocalist from Flamenco en Vivo. This was our first time at a flamenco show and we really enjoyed it.

Due to hard work and perseverance by my good friend Nico my blog and gallery has been moved from its old home (failing hardware) to a new space. Thanks again Nico! Along w/ the move, there are new versions of everything. I’ve been out of town so haven’t gotten a chance to update my theme or link in older photos, but hang around as it will get there. In the meantime, check out the upgrade to Gallery 2 - just click on the photo below!

Cheers

On Friday evening, Sarah and I had the privelege of photographing the CEO and Directors of famed Houston dance troupe Planet Funk. It was quite an experience! We worked in CEO Shawn Welling’s small lap pool, which was difficult, however we still managed to make some memorable photos for these fine folks. I’ll post a few of my favorites, and then a few of my favorite photos, taken by Sarah. She’ll have to pick her own herself! :-) Click a photo to be taken to the complete gallery.

CEO Shawn Welling

Director Liz

Choreographer Lindsay
And my favorite photos - taken by Sarah

Lindsay, Liz, and Jen and Shawn
We made these photographs using Canon 5D cameras, dual strobes on the housings, and a pair of slaved Ikelite SS400’s sometimes underwater and sometimes above water. Hope you enjoy!

Besides the usual mechanical birds that you expect to see offshore, the platforms provide a resting place and even a home to many species of birds. The Holstein platform serves as home to at least one pair of hawks. These two can be seen wheeling and soaring around the platform, roosting on the drill rig and the flare boom, and even knocking doves and other small birds out of the air around the platform. Hawks and falcons seem to get along well with human developments - soaring amongst the buildings of Manhattan and sitting on freeway-side lamp-poles.

I’ve also gotten a few shots of the mechanical birds as they take off from the platform:
An S61 and a Puma take off from the platform on their way to either Mad Dog, or shore.

If you haven’t heard from me lately, it’s because I’ve been working offshore since August 25th. For the first month I was on the boat the C-Legacy, a 280′ OSV. This week, I’ve been up on the Holstein Spar platform, so I have internet access again. The C-Legacy is the orange boat in the lower left.
As you can see, I’m certainly having some fun out here when I’m not working (which isn’t often).

I’ve got a full gallery of photos online here:
